La Plaza de España, un lugar único en el mundo

Volviendo a la Plaza de España, esta posición refleja el impacto que tiene el edificio sobre los visitantes, que literalmente lanzan exclamaciones de asombro cuando la descubren. Y esto es cierto y el que os escribe da fe de ello; cuando acudo a la Plaza guiando a un grupo de visitantes, siempre me gusta acceder al monumento por una de las torres, para que hasta llegado el momento no puedan distinguir casi nada. Así, les invito a cerrar los ojos hasta que subimos las escaleras y llegamos a la galería superior y....!Tachán! Cuando abren los ojos se escuchan todo tipo guaus y wows debido al impacto que produce esta primera visión, más aún si se efectúa desde una esquina desde la cual la perspectiva es mucho mejor.

Y no es para menos, yo creo que en Sevilla no nos damos cuenta de lo que tenemos. La Plaza de España no es solo hermosísima y espectacular, sino única. Creo que de todas las innumerables cualidades que posee, esta es la más representativa de todas y la que es más repetida por los visitantes. Y es que no se parece a ningún sitio del mundo, es algo que solo se puede ver en Sevilla. También sorprende su juventud, ya que ni siquiera llega a tener 100 años; casi todos los visitantes le otorgan varios siglos de existencia.

Para conocer el origen de este monumento, nos tenemos que remontar a 1929, año en el que se celebró en nuestra ciudad la Exposición Iberoamericana. En ella, participaron diversos países que quisieron exponer su patrimonio en el interior de increíbles pabellones decorados con estilos arquitectónicos propios de sus lugares de origen. Y España por supuesto no quería ser menos, por lo que se encargó al gran maestro Aníbal González el diseño de tan importante edificio.

Lo primero que asombra es su peculiar forma elíptica. ¿Cuál es la razón? El objetivo de la Exposición era restablecer los lazos de cordialidad entre España y sus antiguas colonias americanas, por lo que el genial arquitecto quiso simular con la forma de la Plaza un abrazo fraternal entre España y América. Un abrazo que apunta hacia el río Guadalquivir, la conexión histórica entre Sevilla y el Nuevo Mundo. No es su único símbolo, ya que los 4 magníficos puentes situados sobre el canal de agua que rodea la Plaza representan los 4 reinos históricos de España; Aragón, Castilla, León y Navarra.

Realmente todo el edificio en sí es un homenaje en España, en una época en la que se necesitaba, ya que el país estaba inmerso en una profunda crisis social y económica. El estilo arquitectónico del monumento es el regionalismo, el cual se ha inspirado en la herencia depositada por la más brillante etapa histórica de España, con grandes testimonios artísticos como el Renacimiento y el Barroco. Tiene una gran diversidad de elementos, como el ladrillo tallado, los balaustres o los elementos heráldicos. También son notables los forjados, tanto en las rejas como en las sensacionales farolas que adornan la Plaza; o la galería porticada con sus arcos de medio punto y cerámica vidriada, en contraste con las columnas de mármol blanco.

Y por supuesto también quiero hablaros de la gran joya de la Plaza de España, sus bancos provinciales. Verá en la parte baja de la galería 48 magníficos bancos cubiertos de llamativa cerámica; se trata de un homenaje a las provincias españolas, las cuales están representadas en orden alfabético, desde la A de Álava hasta la Z de Zaragoza. Cada una representa un mural con un episodio histórico importante acaecido en algún lugar de la provincia, además de un mapa de la misma donde se pueden observar sus localidades más importantes. Es muy bonita la tradición de hacerse la foto en la provincia de la que procede uno, a la gente le hace mucha ilusión encontrar la localidad donde vive o donde ha nacido. Por eso es un homenaje a todos los españoles, y una buena manera de sentirnos orgullosos del país que tenemos.

También relacionado con este espíritu patriótico, podrá encontrar sobre los bancos provinciales, intercalados entre los arcos de la galería, 48 bustos de personajes relacionados con el pasado de España. Escritores como Cervantes, pintores como Goya y Velázquez, conquistadores como Hernán Cortés, marineros ilustres como Cristóbal Colón, o reinas como Isabel la Católica. En resumen, no deje de visitar la Plaza de España cuando venga a Sevilla. Incluso si ya la había visitado anteriormente, no se aburrirá de descubrir nuevos detalles, como yo hago cada vez que entro en este emblema ya no de Sevilla, sino del mundo.

A hug that points towards the Guadalquivir River, the historical connection between Seville and the New World. It is not its only symbol, since the 4 magnificent bridges located on the water channel that surrounds the Plaza represent the 4 historical kingdoms of Spain; Aragón, Castilla, León and Navarra.

Really the whole building itself is a tribute in Spain, at a time when it was needed, since the country was immersed in a deep social and economic crisis. The architectural style of the monument is the regionalism, which has been inspired by the heritage deposited by the most brilliant historical period in Spain, with great artistic testimonies such as the Renaissance and the Baroque. It has a great diversity of elements, such as carved brick, balusters or heraldic elements. Also remarkable is the iron forge, both in the bars and in the sensational lamps that adorn the Plaza; or the gallery with its semicircular arches and glazed ceramics, in contrast to the white marble columns.

And of course I also want to tell you about the great jewel of the Plaza de España, its provincial banks. You will see in the lower part of the gallery 48 magnificent banks covered with striking ceramics; It is a tribute to the Spanish provinces, which are represented in alphabetical order, from the A de Álava to the Z of Zaragoza. Each one represents a mural with an important historical episode that happened somewhere in the province, as well as a map of it where you can see its most important locations. The tradition of taking a photo in the province from which one comes is very beautiful, people are very happy to find the place where they live or where they were born. That is why it is a tribute to all Spaniards, and a good way to feel proud of the country we have.
